The Ugly Side of Freelancing
My experience freelancing for four months
I won’t let this stop me from continuing, and I will ensure it doesn’t happen to anyone else either.
Freelancing is a profession with many perks, yet there’s no justification in comparing it to any other job. But the ugliness of freelancing reared its head when a client ghosted me and still refused to pay me. I honestly thought something happened to her and gave her the benefit of the doubt. Boy, was I wrong/duped/fooled.
She ignored me for an entire month, which eventually drove me to take action. When I found out my work was already published and she still ignored my emails and phone calls, I contacted the company directly. And then, only then, she miraculously appeared from the rock under which she was hiding (or avoiding me), still refusing to pay me and expecting me to sort it out with the company. This doesn’t even come close to covering all the other blogs I wrote for her.
The best part — or rather, the worst part, I should say — is that I’m not the first. But I will do everything I can to make sure I am the last. I met this client on Upwork. I usually always read the reviews left by freelancers to search for the client’s name. For this client, I’m not sure why I didn’t. It was a very long detailed posting, and maybe I was impressed.
